Brief Description of Work This contractor will serve as the Senior Database Administrator for the Unisys mainframe DMS II and related software. This position is responsible for instructing and assisting application developers in the design and use of DMS II databases, ALGOL support, and INSYTE software and access to mainframe data. This position will assist with changes to Mainframe databases to support the Business Application Modernization (BAM) project. Support any database restores that are required. B. Background on the work requested The Michigan Department of State (MDOS) critical systems run on the Unisys Mainframe. These systems support the vehicle registration and driver license systems for the entire State of Michigan. These systems are supported by multiple Mainframe databases. This position will serve as the Senior Database Administrator for these critical databases. This position will support the 10 databases critical to supporting Branch and other MDOS applications. These databases include the driver, vehicle, and driver responsibility used by the MDOS Branch applications. This Senior DBA will maintain and modify the databases as required. They will take proper actions to ensure branch office systems perform well. These tasks include problem resolution, backup and recovery tasks, performing mainframe database tasks related to the Business Application Modernization (BAM) project, monitoring database sizes and performance, performing reorganizations of the databases, purges when required and support other projects that require database changes. C. Objectives Support MDOS Mainframe databases to provide continuing functional databases. This includes preventive maintenance, ongoing support, database issue resolution, and support of any projects that require database modifications. D. MDOS technical environment for the work Unisys Libra Mainframe E. Description of the requested work, including deliverables and knowledge transfer Technical support is required to assist with the following tasks: Ongoing Systems Maintenance, Enhancements, Upgrades and Knowledge Transfer The Contractor shall conduct ongoing system maintenance, enhancements and upgrade activities to the Unisys Mainframe databases. Additionally, the Contractor shall conduct knowledge transfer sessions with MDTMB on the supported systems. The Contractor shall be responsible for the following duties: • Provide mainframe application development support. • Monitor the performance of all production databases and redesign/reorganize to optimize when necessary. • Educate application programmers on DMS II programming language constructs. • Monitor the development of new application programs to ensure that efficient coding practices are employed and that database integrity is maintained. • Perform database extracts to support other State initiatives. • Manage developers in selection and use of other file management options and access tools. • Perform troubleshooting procedures, such as reviewing database access and usage for performance issues. • Oversee mainframe database design/maintenance. • Mentor other database administrators. • Act as database architect for all new database creation and for changes made to existing databases to accommodate new application initiatives. • Develop and maintain procedures for backing up and recovering all databases. • Serve as technical consultant to all Agency project managers with regard to data structures and efficient applications processes. • Design data and process flows. • Makes recommendations on applications/processes.   Call 502-379-4456 Ext 100 for more details.
